Community Outreach in the Woodlands – Pike County Humane Society Fundraiser

The weather threaten to give this event a close call but the sun shone through and it became a dog and cat day afterall. … and some ferrets too! All through the hours of our ‘Spring into Action with the Pike County Humane Society’ event, individuals and family members stopped by paying the animals a visit and making donations as well. Our boxes over flowed with donations of goods from pet cages to soft goods. Several vehicles were used to take the goods back to there location. Some of the items were in such great condition. They will use these for the PCHS’s Upcoming Tricky Tray event.

There were several notable opportunities where adults came in, took pixs of the various animals and then went back home, etc. to do the show-n-tell. One parent in particular did this and actually came back with his son and they adopted a young cat. You can view the happy pet owner in the gallery pictures of this event.

Another adoption was a husband who came in, went straight to a doggie cage, stood there game planning as his wife walked in moments later. He surprised her with a dog for her and she was soooo delighted.(see this photo opt in the gallery section)  Also you will see her with the other Woodland Recreation Volunteers as she is holding her new pet discussing the new addition to the family.

Allow me to introduce to you our youngest Woodland Recreation Committee member. Her name is Laura Cassaro. (seen in a photo with her sister Katie) Laura and her sister were great at getting the other kids interest in making the dog and cat stuff sock toys.
Laura’s presence there as a young volunteer created an interest for parents whose kids are earning points in Volunteerism to get involve as well. Now there’s a thought and believe me, there is always a need for an extra pair of hands!

The dog and cat stuff sock toys were also a donation to the Humane Society for the animals to play with and they were a big hit noted by the PCHS staff. As the kids came in with their parents, they had the opportunity to make a stuff toy as their donation and one for their pet at home. Additionally, with materials left over from the toy making activity, the PCHS staff would like for us to send them more of these toys as we do them so this will be an on-going activity. Who knew this would mushroom into an regular occurrence!

Now another interesting moment of this event was when this woman walked in with a bag of donations and a dog on a lease. At first glance, one would have wondered why was she bringing a dog to this event. Well as it turns out, she had adopted her Pug at the Milford Music Festival last year and wanted to stop by and show Barry (PCHS staff executive) her success story one year later. Her name is Beryl York who lives in the Woodlands and her Pug’s name is Dozer which was his previous name that she kept.

So all in all, it was a success and well enjoyed by EVERYONE. This event was appreciated from so many angles by people who showed up throughout the day. It clearly was not just another Humane Society event – by all who were there, it was a ‘Hallmark moment of heart filled joy for the animals, shared pet-owner stories with appreciation that even though all animals did not go home with a new owner, surely through all the attention, they felt the love to be hopeful.

We ‘Sprung into Action with Your Interest and Love for the Animals’.
… always remember – No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog or cat makes you rich.

Thanks to everyone for coming out,

Spring into Action with Pike County Humane Society

Spring into Action with Pike County Humane Society

On April 2, 2011, the Poconos Woodland Lakes Property Owners Association will join in as many others have in helping to fund The Pike County Humane Society. We are sponsoring a , “Spring into Action with Pike County Humane Society” event at the Woodlands Clubhouse from 11am to 2pm. PCHS is not a State or Federal agency.

Though a small allowance is budgeted by Pike County every year, its equivalence is less than one weeks worth of its operations cost. This is why throughout the Pike County area every year there is a constant presence of private donators and fundraisers. We are joining in to be a very important part of this solution as well by helping the animals live a happier, healthier and longer life.

Here’s what we have planned for this wonderful event;
Barry Helm of PCHS will bring the animals for the kids to see and pet along with possible adoption. This event is open to the public as we reach out to all friends and supporters for this event. Meet wonderful animals who are available for adoption and chat with Mr. Helm’s about the animals behavior, adoption and shelter.
The fun continues with the magical wonders of Magician Tom Noreika of the Woodlands. … and it doesn’t stop there. With imagination, we will be creating toys filled with catnip and doggie treats for the animals to have and play with. Making stuff toys are a perfect craft for kids to make for they require the simplest of materials.

The concept is “Stuff Toys out of Lonesome Socks”. Gather those lonesome socks whose mate mysteriously disappeared while bathing in the laundry machine. The kids will bring those lonesome socks back to life as their imagination gives a sock new personality.
Spring cleaning will help tremendously when you think of what to do with old pillows, clean towels, old blankets and lonesome socks – “Bring them to this event!” Boxes will be set up at the Woodlands Clubhouse for all donations. We welcome the following donations; catnip, un-open dog & cat food, un-open dog & cat treats, new litter boxes, bleach, toys, grooming items, paper towels, old pillows, clean towels, old blankets, lonesome socks and any other pet item you can think of.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day as well. Buy a chips and drink for a dollar. This fee as well as ALL other donations will go to The Pike County Humane Society.

CABIN FEVER DANCE – HOT HOT HOT

The Fever was running Hot at the Woodlands Club House

Up to this point, I have been saying “Party over Here” and indeed this was the case in the Woodlands Saturday nite at the Clubhouse. Another crowd pleaser it was, for lots of fun was had by all. Never a dull moment as DJ Terry of DJ Productions kept the dance floor going with our favorite songs as well as a few of her own.
It didn’t matter who you danced with, just dancing and having a good time up to the eve of the hour was just perfect. Whether you danced or not, the smiles on people’s faces expressed such delight. … and to think, you didn’t have to travel far for it either!

Who knew, the Clubhouse had its own Disco Ball twinkling as we line danced the heels off of our shoes! A great evening for friends and neighbors to socialized.

I would like to take this opportunity as well to mention additional Upcoming Events

Anonymous Letter – Board Response

Dear Fellow Woodland Lakes Property Owners;

It has come to the attention of this Board that an anonymous letter was sent to the entire community’s membership.  We suspect these people have stolen from our office a confidential mailing list used to address these letters.   This is an illegal and libelous act, jeopardizing the confidentially of your personal information, and defaming the good works of your elected board members.

Furthermore, we suspect they are a small handful of people who wish to hide behind anonymity, of this letter, to be either ex-board members or employees who have personal vendettas against a current board member, and do not speak for or act on the behalf of the entire community.

Since these people do not have the courage to come forward in an open public forum, we are forced to present our rebuttal and truth herein.

We as a Board, challenge these cowards to come forward and produce any factual evidence of wrong doing or theft by one of our current standing President, Vice President, Treasurer or board members.

We welcome all Community Members to participate in all meetings, come out and support the good work that our volunteers are doing in recreation, and various other committees.   Please help us to contribute to making Pocono Woodland Lakes the beautiful community to raise our families that it is.

A Jolly Good Time had by All

I’m now retiring for the evening, caught the tail end of a program and it goes straight to a commercial. The scene was in a huge atrium of a building and a little boy is seen walking over to this statuesque figure. He tugs on the corner of the jacket trying to get attention saying, “I heard you know Santa Claus and I got to get this letter to him”. To no avail, the little boy was persistent as his tiny voice echoes against the walls of this building. The little boy repeats himself, oh, but in the meantime, the camera moves up to the face of a Marine, still and motionless.

The camera moves back down to the hand of this Marine as he mechanically opens his white gloved hand and quicky the little boy dropped his tiny folded up note in it and dashed away. This was the “Perfect” to a wonderful evening at the Woodlands Toys for Tots event. Kids were everywhere and so were the Parents too! The scene was very festive from corner to corner of the large Clubhouse room and as the evening progress, more parents with kids were coming.
Our very own Magician Tom Noreika was entertaining the kids while in the background we were serenaded with Christmas carols sung by Walter Edwards on guitar. You could feel the buzz in the air as we waited for Santa Claus to make his appearance. And when he did, the party was like it started all over again. And yes, we Adults joined in too, for it was picture taking time and we are all kids at heart when it comes to jolly ‘ole Saint Nick!

The festive setting was all through the decorative hands of Sandy Lannon another Woodlands neighbor for when it comes to events, Sandy is our go-to Decorator.

Tina Spencer of the Marine Corps League, Gung Ho Detachment was present and very grateful for the turnout of the huge box full of gifts for the kids and teens. She explained a little bit about the process of disbursing the gifts. Each year a location here in the Milford area is chosen. The families are provided through the Pike County Human Development in Milford. Toys are placed on display by category and age group for the families to choose from. There is also an opportunity to give recycle toys to the Toys for Tots event as well.
Tina also spoke of future events for 2011 such as the “Relay for Life” event held the first weekend of June. It is an event that celebrates Cancer Survivors. The track race is during the day and as the evening sets in, The Luminaires Ceremony of lighting candles around the track in honor of a Survivor is done. There is also a dinner held as well. You will here more about this event as time gets closer from the Recreation Committee and how The Woodlands may possibly get involve.

To the Nanny, Grandparents, and Parents thanks for bringing the kids out and donating the toys for what has turned out to be a remembrance time at the clubhouse. We reached out to the Woodlands to join in our efforts for the Toys for Tots program and YOU delivered.

There was a moment, when I thought someone bought their iPod there to keep the music going and no that was not the case. Elliott, the Vice President of the Woodlands Board was over off to the side playing his guitar keeping the mood of the evening going.

For any of the families that were in attendance, we would love to hear from you regarding this event and Yes, to the little one’s and not so little ones, you too are invited to share your comments on this event. Let me know if you got to see the Toys for Tots commercial, I haven’t seen it since, “was I dreaming?”

Happy Holidays,

The Recreation Committee/LT
